The sponsors of a drug-rehabilitation center stage a robbery to maintain funding of the facility, but the loot turns out to be syndicate-owned.

Fast-talking, shifty eyed Chief Minister is due for surgery but develops complications and passes away. He is whisked away by Yumraaj, the God of Death, to the heavenly gates, where the Minister must make a choice between Heaven and Swarg. Heaven did not seem too colorful, so the Minister chose Swarg, full of song and beautiful dancing women. Once in Swarg, he meets with Lord Indra, and sets about expressing dissatisfaction about the way things are run in Swarg. He then sets about creating chaos and division to the bewildered inhabitants, into creating a oppostion to Lord Indra, with hilarious and unpredictable results.

An angel named Simon comes to Earth and finds that he enjoys, among other things, hot dogs, beer and meddling in the lives of people.

Trade shown, reviewed and released as "Heaven Only Knows," for a short while until the exhibitors (in mostly small town situations) started complaining that customers were staying away in droves because they thought it was a religious film. UA pulled it back, in the same release year, and retitled it "Montana Mike" and sent it back out again, one of the few instances where an original title and an alternate title occurred in the same original release period or year, despite some sources that seem to think original and alternate and re-issue titles all came about in the same year. Actually it was a "religious" film or, to be more specific, a "religious fantasy" film. but it sold well in the stix as a Western, and worked well as one also. It seems that in Heaven, the Book of Life and The Book of Destiny are all out of balance because of one guy, a Montana saloon keeper and cold, ruthless killer, and the problem is the angels forgot to make a entry in the Book of Life for him.

The main part of the film takes place by the legendary Lethe River on New Zealand’s wild and wondrous South Island. Back in 1988, one of the most iconic fly fishers of our time, Lars Lenth, spent three months exploring the fabled river and fishing for its abnormally large trout. At night, he would sit down in a remote cabin and write down his experiences in a journal. Nearly 25 years later, the young trout bum Rolf Nylinder looses his way in the wilderness near Lethe. By chance, he finds the long-lost journal, full of insights about the very soul of fly fishing. Along with Rolf on the trip is documentarist Peter Christensen, filming their mostly failing attempts to catch trout, and Rolf’s ever-growing interest in the wisdom of the journal. The old book becomes a moral compass for Rolf, who gradually becomes more and more obsessed by the poetic adventures Lenth wrote down in a dreamy past. Destiny forces the two fly fishers together, but what will happen when their worlds collide?
